Raw vs Refined Shea Butter: How to Tell Which One Is in Your Jar
Okwuma ·
Raw or unrefined shea butter has not undergone the additional refining used to reduce its natural scent and colour. Refined shea butter has been processed further, but you cannot reliably tell which one is in your jar by looking at it alone.
What is the difference between raw and refined shea butter?
Shea butter is a plant fat extracted from the kernels of the shea tree. Both unrefined and refined shea butter can soften dry skin and help reduce moisture loss.
Unrefined shea butter retains more of its characteristic scent and colour. Refining generally makes the butter more neutral in smell and appearance, which can be useful when making cosmetics with a consistent finish.
Neither word tells you everything about the finished product. The other ingredients, the way it is made and how it is stored also matter.
Can you tell by the colour or smell?
Colour and scent offer clues, not proof.
- Unrefined shea butter often ranges from ivory to pale yellow and has a characteristic nutty or earthy scent.
- Refined shea butter is generally paler and has little natural scent.
- Added oils, butters and fragrance can change the appearance and smell of a finished blend.
A pale jar is not automatically refined. A strongly scented jar is not proof that its shea is unrefined. Natural variation and the full formula both deserve a place in the conversation.
What should you look for on the label?
Start with the ingredient list, then look for a clear statement from the maker about whether the shea butter is unrefined or refined. The ingredient name alone may not tell you how it was processed.
Ask plainly: Is the shea butter unrefined? Where does it come from? What else is in the jar?
Also separate the ingredient from the finished product. A blend can contain unrefined shea butter without being pure shea butter. Whipping describes how a product is made, not whether its shea ingredient has been refined.
Which kind does Okwuma use?
Shea Macoca uses unrefined shea butter from northern Nigeria. We whip it with three other ingredients to make our four-ingredient base:
- Unrefined shea butter.
- Mango butter.
- Virgin coconut oil.
- Castor oil.
Choose unscented Shea Macoca or the light signature scent of amber, mango and coconut. The scented version adds fragrance to that four-ingredient base. Unscented means no added fragrance, not necessarily no natural ingredient scent.
Shea Macoca comes in a 2 oz jar for $18 and an 8 oz jar for $50.
Is unrefined shea butter always the better choice?
Not for every person or every formula. Both forms can soften dry skin. Someone who prefers a more neutral ingredient scent may favour refined shea butter, while someone who enjoys shea's natural character may prefer unrefined.
At Okwuma, we use unrefined shea butter from northern Nigeria as the foundation of Shea Macoca. What matters is being clear about what is in the jar, so you can choose with confidence.
