Its shea butter is unrefined: no bleaching, no deodorizing, sourced from small-batch producers in northern Nigeria who hand-process it the traditional way. Every jar is Shea Macoca, unscented or with a light signature scent of amber, mango and coconut. ### What is shea butter?
Shea butter is the natural fat pressed from the nuts of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa), which grows wild across the savanna belt of West Africa, including northern Nigeria. It is solid at room temperature, melts on contact with skin, and has been used for body and hair care there for generations.

### What is the difference between unrefined and refined shea butter?
Unrefined (raw) shea butter is extracted and filtered without bleaching or deodorizing, so it keeps its natural ivory-to-golden color and soft, nutty smell. Refined shea butter is processed further to be white and odorless. Okwuma uses unrefined shea butter: no bleaching, no deodorizing.

Four ingredients and nothing else: unrefined shea butter from northern Nigeria, mango butter, virgin coconut oil and castor oil. It comes unscented, or with Okwuma's light signature scent of amber, mango and coconut.

### How do you use shea butter on skin?
Apply it to warm, damp skin right after a shower or bath to seal in moisture. Start with a small amount, warm it between your palms, and massage it in with slow circular motions. Give it a few minutes to settle before dressing.

### Can shea butter be used on hair?
Yes. Many people use a small amount of shea butter to seal moisture into hair ends and edges, or to soften a beard. Use very little, since it is rich.

### Is there an unscented shea butter for sensitive skin?

### Why does shea butter get soft or grainy?
Shea butter softens when it is warm and firms up when it is cool, and big temperature swings can make it slightly grainy. That is texture, not spoilage: it still melts smoothly on skin. Keep it somewhere cool and out of direct sun.
